Tasmanian markets want GM ban to stay: Minister

The Tasmanian Government says it will be much harder to maintain the state's moratorium on genetically modified (GM) crops now that Victoria and New South Wales have announced they'll lift their bans on GM canola.
Those states say the move will allow farmers to compete on a level playing field with overseas producers.
The Tasmanian Government is currently reviewing the state's moratorium.
But the state's Primary Industries Minister, David Llewellyn, says the overwhelming feedback has been that the ban should remain.
"Consumers, food manufacturers, some farmers and indeed our markets in Japan in particular are indicating that they want the moratorium extended - not lifted," he said.

In fact, the overseas markets do want a level playing field so they can sell their product without Australia being a threat anymore with their green image. At the moment we get a premium on our canola prices (see non-gm-farmers.com) because we are not GM.

Consumers don't want it so why should we lay down our green image for the overseas countries that have gone down the mistake of GM.

Tasmania should do what Western Australia has done and ban all GM seeds into the state with a fine if they do. Follow WA's example as Kim Chance is not taking any chances. He's waiting for scientific evidence to prove how dangerous GM is. If he is proven wrong (which I doubt will happen), only then would he go down this one way path.
